Scenic Drive to Fountain Hills

February 6 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join us as we go on a scenic drive to Fountain Hills. We will start by taking a meandering route through beautiful desert neighborhoods in North Scottsdale, past expansive horse properties with views of Four Peaks and the surrounding mountains, and continue through the golf community of Rio Verde and the winding road which passes McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

After a short stop we will continue onto the Beeline Highway to the East Valley, where we’ll pass Usery Mountain Regional Park and cross the Salt River, a popular waterway for river tubers. Keep an eye out, as you may spot the legendary Salt River wild horses along the road! The iconic Salt River wild horses represent the wild, free spirit of Arizona and the American West. These horses are a historic population of unbranded, unclaimed, free-roaming horses that were born in the wild and are now protected within the Tonto National Forest. It is believed that the herd is descended from the Spanish horses brought to Arizona by the Spanish missionary Father Eusebio Kino in the 1600’s. We might just get lucky and see some on this tour!

Our next stop is at the Water Users Recreation Site giving us the opportunity to view imposing cliffs rising above the river with another perspective of Four Peaks to the north. Continuing on, we’ll pass by Saguaro Lake, one of six reservoirs created to supply a reliable source of water to the Salt River Valley. The tour continues on the Beeline Highway which will take us to our final destination at the lake in Fountain Hills.

Fountain Hills

At its full height of 560 feet, the fountain is higher than the Washington Monument, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, and three times as high as Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park.

Lunch is on your own at the end of the tour. There are numerous restaurants, many within walking distance or a very short drive from Fountain Lake, with menus offering traditional American, Italian, Mexican, Greek, Tapas, and Sushi. Bon appetit!
