An Evening with Indy Winner Arie Luyendyk

At a crowded Alpio at Troon, two-time Indy 500 winner Arie Luyendyk recalled his racing career for AZPCA members Tuesday night, November 18, calmly remembering the 240mph laps and what it took to turn them.

Arie Luyendyk speaking.

Arie had quite a run through the 1990s, with two Indy wins among a cluster of excellent finishes. Was he just braver than the others then?

“Just the opposite,” he said. He didn’t overdrive the car, finding exactly what it would do and not pushing beyond into that zone where metal meets concrete. When the car is doing its part, winning happens.

“The races you win are easier than the ones you don’t win,” he said. You’re not fighting a car that’s fighting back.
